The case for cold calling seems to come a go with the wind. One month it’s in style and another month it isn’t.

Every year, someone somewhere declares cold calling "officially dead," only for it to rise from the ashes once again.

Cold calling will always have its place. You will need to get better as things change, buyers become harder to reach, and technology advances.

I spent some time digging into some of the current trends, skills, and technology that are impacting cold calling today.

Spoiler alert, reports of its demise continue to be greatly exaggerated!

In this article, we will take a deep dive into cold calling and highlight what’s impacting it most, and how you can stay ahead of what’s working and what isn’t.

Let's dive in...

The Trends

Cold Calling Still Has a Pulse

Despite the avalanche of digital channels, cold calling remains surprisingly resilient. The data doesn't lie: a remarkable 51% of leads are still attributed to this traditional channel. More tellingly, over 80% of sales directors consider the phone essential for outbound lead generation.

Organizations that abandon cold calling altogether experience 42% less growth than those who keep dialing. That's not a small difference, it's nearly cutting your growth potential in half!

Cold calling is like that old landline phone in your parents' house—seemingly outdated but still mysteriously working when everything else fails! While your prospects might not answer unknown numbers on the first ring anymore, they haven't disconnected their phones either.

Harder But Still Worth It

Let's address the elephant in the room: cold calling success rates have dropped to 2.3% in 2025, nearly half of last year's 4.82%. Before you throw your headset across the room, consider this:

32% of prospects still answer calls from companies they haven't spoken with before, and 82% of buyers remain open to meetings with proactive sellers.

Yes, it's harder to get through, but when you do, your odds are actually pretty good! It's like fishing, fewer bites, but the fish are bigger! The key is understanding that cold calling has evolved from a volume game to a precision sport. It's not about how many calls you make, but how strategically you make them.

There Is a '‘Good Time” to Call

Turns out, cold calling is a bit like dating, timing really is everything! Calls made between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. are 71% more effective than calls made during other hours. And if you want to maximize your chances, Wednesday outperforms other weekdays by a stunning 50%.

There is also a strong case for more connections when calling on Friday as well.

Even more fascinating is the optimal number of call attempts: three. By the third call, 93% of conversations occur, and by the fifth, that number climbs to over 98%. However, sales reps need an average of 8 calls to reach a prospect and book a meeting.

Why the discrepancy? Because 80% of prospects say "no" four times before saying "yes." Persistence pays, but strategic persistence pays better!

AI Is Your Wingman

In 2025, AI isn't just an option or a nice-to-have anymore; it's your secret weapon for cold calling success. A remarkable 75% of B2B companies plan to use or are already using AI for cold calling this year. The results speak for themselves:
